Just Tokyo and a sense of discovery.
A roaming photo walk through the Tokyo that most visitors never encounter — guided by curiosity, not expectations. For photographers of every level who’d rather discover than be directed.
From ¥25,000
Most photo walks take you to the same predictable spots: that lantern-lit alley, that neon-soaked crossing, that famous shopping street. Sure, you’ll come home with photos of famous places, and that’s fine, but there’s so much more to Tokyo than that.
These walks are a bit different. We can begin and end just about anywhere, navigating by instinct, by curiosity, by whatever catches our eye. The route emerges as we go. You’ll photograph places you won’t find on any list, because as interesting as they are, they take a bit of effort to find, and most people don’t make the effort.
Making an effort makes all the difference.
Typical Tour: Predetermined “instagrammable” spots, the same route every time.
This Walk: Organic drift through residential Tokyo — shrines, shopping streets, back alleys, whatever we happen to find.
Typical Tour: “Stand here and shoot that” composition advice
This Walk: Real-time coaching on seeing and creating, grounded in three decades of photographic practice
Typical Tour: Generic instruction for generic results
This Walk: A pre-walk conversation so the experience is shaped around your interests and experience
Typical Tour: Ends at the last location and that’s it.
This Walk: Post-walk image review — we look at what you shot and talk through your images and impressions of Tokyo
A photo walk isn’t just a walk with cameras. There’s a structure — loose but intentional — designed to put you in a good position to make interesting work.
This isn’t a typical photo walk and it isn’t for everyone. So who is it for?
Whatever you want to shoot with is fine. Camera phones are welcome, as is anything else, whether it’s digital, film, etc. If you have questions about what to bring, we’ll figure it out before the walk. The equipment matters a lot less than the eye behind the camera, and developing that eye is what we’re here for.
This might not be for you if you’re looking for a checklist of photogenic spots, guaranteed golden-hour shots, or a heavily structured lesson. This is about organic exploration, and that means accepting some amount of uncertainty.
If this doesn’t sound like the right experience for you, no worries. There are many other tours and photo walks available in the area.
And for what it’s worth, I also offer walking tours and photography lessons.
I’ve been exploring Tokyo on foot with a camera in hand for over a decade now. My goal wasn’t ever to see the sights, really, but instead to understand the city more deeply. I wanted to know the nature of this immense urban area through examining its many parts and how they relate to each other. Whether it’s quiet residential streets, industrial areas, business districts, or anything else, there’s never a shortage of new things to see, experience, and learn.
Photography entered my life 30 years ago, and it’s trained me to pay attention deeply. You can’t photograph something you haven’t truly noticed, after all, and the practice of slowing down, looking closely, and taking the time to really sit with a scene has taught me so much. I believe that the ordinary details of the world have volumes to tell us if only we listen and allow them to speak in their own voices.
These walks are my attempt to share my way of approaching the world. Together, we’ll practice exploring, slowing down, deeply noticing, and making photographs that reflect our real experience.
I’m not here to point you at postcard shots. I’m here to help you develop the kind of attentive practice that makes anywhere interesting to photograph.

Walks typically last a few hours — long enough to go deep, not so long it becomes a slog. We can start from a major station (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ebisu, and others) or any location that interests you. Though walks usually focus on Tokyo’s 23 Special Wards, other locations are available.
The standard rate covers up to four adults. Children are welcome and don’t factor into pricing. For larger groups, please get in touch for a quote.
Bring whatever you shoot with. Smartphone cameras are completely fine. If you’re unsure what to bring, we can discuss it before the walk. The eye matters more than the equipment.
Walks run rain or shine, short of typhoons or dangerous conditions. For summer heat, morning or evening tours are recommended. Bring appropriate clothing and footwear.
Bookings can be arranged for most any time, from early morning to late evening. Please get in touch if the time you want isn’t available in the booking system, we may be able to work something out.
If you or someone in your group has mobility concerns, routes can usually be adjusted. Please reach out before booking so we can plan accordingly.
Book directly below, or get in touch first if you have questions — either is fine. Once you’ve booked, I’ll send you a short questionnaire so I can learn a bit about you before we meet.
