Nothing Special

Contemporary media has trained us to admire the exotic, the extraordinary, and the dramatic. And while I'm happy to witness a spectacular view or a dramatic moment, drama isn't what drives me to make photographs.

I'm drawn to the mundane. I am fascinated by the everyday and am regularly captivated by the beauty embedded in the utterly ordinary everything that surrounds us at all times. Drama, when it shows up, is a gift, but not a reliable one. Learn to appreciate what's at hand, in any place and at any time, and your relationship with the world will fundamentally change. Learn how to photograph it, and your practice will fundamentally change.

Elliott Erwitt put it this way: “Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

Much of what I photograph doesn’t matter. It’s nothing special. It’s special to me, though, because it has whispered something meaningful in a quiet moment.
